ACCA Hong Kong and University of Macau Sign Memorandum of Understanding to Enhance Accountancy Development
The "Forum on IFRS Adoption in Macau – Visions and Plan & MoU Signing Ceremony" organised by ACCA Hong Kong and the Department of Accounting and Information Management, Faculty of Business Administration of the University of Macau was successfully held last Saturday at the University of Macau. Organisers are honoured to have Orieta Lau, Director of Macau SAR Finance Services Bureau as the guest of honour of the event. Morison Chan, President of ACCA Hong Kong and Professor Iu Vai Pan, Rector of the University of Macau represented the two parties and signed the Memorandum of Understanding at the ceremony.
Following the adoption of the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) in Macau starting in January 2007, ACCA Hong Kong and the University of Macau joined hands to organise this Forum to seek insights and expert advices on the challenges and plans of the adoption of IFRS in Macau. This Forum also provided an effective platform for accounting and finance professionals to exchange their views on such implementation.
The Forum consisted of two parts, including presentations and panel discussion. Invited speakers Iong Kong Leong, President of the Committee of Macau Registered Auditors and Registered Accountants (CRAC) and Gordon Lee, Partner, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu shared their expertise on the visions and plans of the adoption of IFRS in Macau and the IASB / IFRS updates respectively. During the panel discussion session, invited speakers Nelson Lam of Nelson & Company, CPA; Ho Mei Va, President of the Macau Society of Certified Practising Accountants (MSCPA) and Maria Y.M Lee, Partner, Audit and Risk Advisory Services of KPMG discussed on the first-time adoption of IFRS in Hong Kong and Macau.
To further strengthen the collaboration and partnership, ACCA Hong Kong and the University of Macau entered into a strategic alliance partnership and signed the memorandum of understanding at the event, which signified the commitment of both parties in nurturing accounting professionals in the region. The partnership aims to strengthen the technical knowledge and practice of professional accountancy through programme accreditation and joint collaboration in organising activities such as joint seminars, workshops and joint researches. ACCA will also provide continual support and sponsorship in activities organised by the newly established Accounting Students’ Society together with granting annual scholarships to outstanding accounting undergraduate students nominated by the University.
Morison Chan, President of ACCA Hong Kong stated, "Since 2006, ACCA Hong Kong has been cooperating with the CRAC of the Macau SAR Finance Services Bureau and had jointly organised a series of seminars and industry specific workshops on IFRS for local accounting and auditing practitioners in 2007. Through our strategic alliance with the University of Macau, we look forward to supporting and nurturing three-dimensional accountants to meet the growing demand for financial talent locally and globally."
Professor Michael J. Gift, Interim Dean, Faculty of Business Administration of the University of Macau said, "This Forum has set the standard for the manner in which the University can cooperate with the profession to provide a valuable service to professionals, students and academics in a business discipline. In particular, in this programme the symbiotic relationship between the University and ACCA has resulted in enhancing the working knowledge of Macau professional accountants. These efforts by the University of Macau and ACCA are critical at this time of accounting transition in Macau."
