ACCA SA donates to Agape Children's Home
“The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) South Africa believes it is important to try to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate. Each year, ACCA offices worldwide select ‘local' projects to support in their own geographic region,” says Head of ACCA SA, Nirri Nair.
This year, ACCA SA decided to support Agape, a home for 13 abused, orphaned and vulnerable children aged between 13 months to 13 years in Yeoville, Johannesburg by donating a cheque of R10 000.00 towards the refurbishment of one of the home's bathrooms.
“ACCA SA always involves its students in these projects. By involving students in these projects, we hope to raise awareness around social responsibility. As a result of their involvement, we hope that our students become far more involved in social upliftment programmes in their own communities. We also hope that once qualified and in formal employment, that they will continue to fly the social responsibility banner in their own organisations,” Nair explains.
Annah Mogaki, Tholoana Thabo Manti Sefiri and Daphney Mabaso students on ACCA's Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) programme, studying through Boston City Campus in Braamfontein accompanied ACCA SA to Agape House. The students spoke to the children, played with them, and helped the younger children with the McDonalds lunch boxes that ACCA had donated. Older children were also given movie vouchers: each of the younger children was given a soft toy. Deeply touched by what they saw, the ACCA students vowed that “they would be back”.
“We all need to look deeply in terms of how we can make a difference. By getting involved, individuals, corporates and professional bodies can make an indelible difference. There are so many causes. It is important not to lose sight of the fact that it is not about money,” Nair observed.
Agape Founder and Director, Tracy Dludla, has worked with street children for the past fourteen years. Recognising that shelters in South Africa did not take in children under the age of six, Dludla wanted to create a home for these children. She also wanted to ensure that aged 18 these children had the assurance that they still had a home.
Agape was one of 62 national women and children charities for which Figjam Marketing organised a national fundraiser as part of the Women's Day Celebrations. Other items on Agape's wish list include volunteers who are willing to assist with painting the home (paint will be supplied), and assistance with the preparation of a sandpit.
