L. Clensy Appavoo
chief executive officer, HLB Appavoo & Associates, Mauritius
For Clensy Appavoo, ACCA was a natural choice. He explains: 'I have always been interested in accountancy. Back in the 1980s, ACCA was the only accountancy qualification accessible to people overseas. Had it not been for ACCA, I may never have had the opportunity to study accountancy.
'Studying ACCA helped me develop my skills and knowledge of accountancy. It has also enhanced my self-confidence and improved my standing and respect in the business community.'
After a long career in the public service, Clensy spent some three years in the private sector as chief accountant with the Mauritius Chamber of Agriculture. In 1989 he set up HLB Appavoo & Associates, a successful accountancy and business consultancy firm in Mauritius. The firm is now among the top five firms in Mauritius and employs more than 100 people.

'HLB Appavoo & Associates is the local member firm of HLB International, a worldwide organisation of professional accounting firms, which provides a comprehensive and personal service relating to auditing, taxation, accounting and general and financial management advice.'
Clensy's hopes for the future of the profession are clear. 'I would like accountants to come together as a single network of professionals on a worldwide scale, to share experiences, pool resources and generally share important information on careers and accounting developments.'
