Jocelyn Thompson
auditor general, Auditor General's Department, Trinidad and Tobago
For Jocelyn Thompson, auditor general of Trinidad and Tobago, being a member of ACCA means that she belongs to a recognised professional body.
‘Having worked in auditing for a number of years before embarking on the ACCA qualification, I decided on ACCA because the auditor general at that time was one of the few ACCA professionals in Trinidad and Tobago,' explains Jocelyn. She became an ACCA member in 1973, after studying for her exams via a correspondence course and also through a scholarship to Leeds College of Commerce – Leeds University, UK.
In 1990, Jocelyn Thompson became auditor general of Trinidad and Tobago. ‘Memorable points during the past 14 years include the computerisation of the auditor general's department in 1992 and the launch of the department's website in January 2004,' says Jocelyn.
Since qualifying as an ACCA member, Jocelyn has seen significant developments in the accounting profession. ‘Globally, this means more meaningful accounting standards, and in Trinidad and Tobago, I see more students passing their ACCA examination and more training opportunities being made available locally,' says Jocelyn. ‘However, I would like to see more recognition by employers of the CAT Scheme so that persons with this qualification can be considered as professionals from an earlier level.'
Responsibility is important to Jocelyn Thompson. ‘Responsibility in accounting means accountability, transparency and good governance in the field of accounting and financial management.'
