Niall Brophy
financial analyst, CitiGroup, Ireland
Niall Brophy, from Dublin in Ireland has become a member of ACCA in its centenary year. 'The reputation of the professional body that I am a member of is important to me. The success of ACCA in reaching its centenary adds to its name and I am honoured to be part of its second century of members,' says Niall who passed his exams in February 2004. 'Achieving membership is a significant personal achievement given all the time and effort involved,' he adds.
After leaving school, Niall didn't have a definite career plan, and studied for a history and politics degree at university. His first job after leaving college allowed Niall to gain broad exposure to different fields, including finance, sales and operations. 'I quickly realised that my aptitude and interests were best suited to finance. I was also keen to develop transferable skills, independent from where I was working, so that I could be in control of my career,' he explains. Because he wanted to continue working while studying - combining practical experience with evening study - Niall opted for ACCA.
'The international recognition that the Professional Scheme receives was also an attraction, especially the opportunity to travel with the qualification.'
During his studies with ACCA, Niall feels that he has developed vital skills in understanding financial tools and models and has gained a wide knowledge of information systems and strategy. Now working as a financial analyst at the Corporate and Investment bank in Citigroup, Niall has sole responsibility for the expense management of several business units. 'I enjoy the ownership and being the first point of contact for all finance matters,' he says.
Niall hopes to enjoy a varied, challenging and interesting career in the future. 'I do not see myself as just an accountant. I see accountancy as one part of my education and personal experience, a skill I am continuously developing to help me enjoy a satisfying career.'
