Wan Ping Yang (Lilian)
senior finance manager, Avon (China) Ltd, China
As senior finance manager at Avon (China) Ltd, Lilian Yang has a broad set of responsibilities. 'My role involves strategic planning and decision-making for the whole company. It's not just about dealing with numbers,' she says.
Lilian is convinced that she made the right career decision. 'ACCA gives you an education to be proud of. From an employer's point of view, I consider ACCA members to have a high level of professional standards and technical knowledge.'
Lilian studied electronics in university and worked for various companies before embarking on a career in accountancy. 'I was looking for a profession which offered good long-term career prospects. I read about ACCA and its excellent reputation in my local newspaper, and the emphasis on professional ethics appealed to me,' she says.
The biggest challenge for Lilian, like many ACCA students, was to achieve a reasonable work-life balance. 'I became very efficient at managing my time as I was extremely busy at work. I also became a mother which meant a huge change in my life. I was lucky because I had a strong support network of "study buddies" who helped get me through the exams.'
Obtaining ACCA membership is just a starting point for Lilian. She seeks to keep up-to-date with changes in the profession, and is enthusiastic about the introduction of continuing professional development for all members. 'I enjoy my job and I am looking forward to a long and successful career,' she says.
